When you have your morning "cup of joe" did you know there might be some additional fillers: wheat, soybean, brown sugar, rye, husks/sticks, acai seeds, barley, corn? The American Chemical Society will present research about a new test that will detect additional substances present in the coffee prior to going to market. According to the article, once the beans have been ground, it's very difficult to visually detect the presence of the fillers. A coffee shortage is encouraging the increase of fillers to maximize profits for producers.
To learn more, please visit the link above but in the meantime, the best advice is to purchase whole beans which you can grind at the store or home. Our personal favorite is fair trade and organic Peace coffee based out of Minneapolis which is available at many local food co-ops and retail locations.
What do you think? Are you surprised by the added fillers - we'd love to hear from you!
