Many in the northern part of the country are deficient in vitamin D and the best source is from the sun. It takes very little exposure to receive maximum health benefits. When prolonged sun exposure is unavoidable you'll want to choose a chemical free sunscreen. A great source for the best sunscreens are listed on the EWG website here: http://www.ewg.org/2014sunscreen/best-sunscreens/best-beach-sport-sunscreens/
Benefits of Vitamin D
"The sunshine vitamin may protect against a host of diseases, including osteoporosis, heart disease, and cancers of the breast, prostate, and colon. What's more, sunlight has other hidden benefits—like protecting against depression, insomnia, and an overactive immune system." Do you have a favorite chemical free sunscreen?
Have you ever accidentally spent a little too much time outside and received more sun than you cared for? Did it result in itchy skin that peeled a few days later? Even with the best intentions of covering up or using a form of sunscreen (chemical free is our recommendation) sunburns can happen.
Jojoba is very similar to the composition of our body's natural skin oils meaning it will absorb quickly into the skin. For sunburn relief apply a mixture of pure aloe vera and a few drops of jojoba to the skin or jojoba alone works great too. Bottles of pure aloe vera can be purchased in your local natural foods store or food co-op. If you receive a severe sunburn, please consult your physician. For more information about jojoba, please visit our Jojoba Uses and Tips page or our Ingredients page.

Now debuting the newest product to the Skin Salvy family! Our Face & Body Creme was designed to soothe all over dry skin and even lips! This is a lighter version of our Emollient with even more jojoba and is best applied after bathing. This is a concentrated product so always start with less and add more as needed. And did you know jojoba and beeswax both have naturally indefinite shelf lives? Your product will maintain it's freshness over time with normal use and NO rancid smell.
Medical professionals: this is an excellent cream for larger areas of application to include deep tissue massage and IASTM techniques.
Why it was developed: Most face creams would cause my face to break out in small welts especially around the chin area. Our Emollient, although perfect for very dry, and cracked skin was too heavy for my face and body. After a year of development and personally testing this product I am still welt free!
Customer Note: A customer who tested the product for us recently commented how well the cream protected the delicate skin around her nose area while fighting a cold. Bonus!
Product details: 2.2oz; screw top container; currently available only in unscented (has slight natural beeswax scent.)
Ingredients: certified organic golden jojoba, unbleached USA beeswax. Nothing else!
Other suggested uses:
Have you ever run out of glass cleaner and needed something in a pinch? This happened to us the other day - and it worked! There will be a little bit of a vinegar scent after you clean but that will disappear in a short amount of time. Almost everyone has some form of vinegar in their cupboard and it's cheap!
Directions: In a spray bottle mix half vinegar and half water, shake, then spray!
Have you used vinegar for any other cleaning uses? Please feel free to share here!
Have you ever tried washing your face at night with a little bit of Milk of Magnesia?
This past week I met with a naturopathic doctor who also specializes in nutrition. My body lacks magnesium (explains the dark chocolate cravings) and by adding a little bit of the unflavored stuff in the blue bottle to my night time face wash it should help reduce minor rosacea and improve elasticity of the skin. Maybe it's time to bathe in it! She also suggested my teenagers give it a try to help with blemish flare-ups. I'll keep you posted of the results.

A few weeks ago a fellow blogger shared on Facebook a delicious way to jazz up water. Supposedly the ingredients may help boost your metabolism and curb your appetite. I don't know if it's drinking more water or the ingredients that provide those benefits but apples and cinnamon are healthy. Both of my teenage kids and I agree it's a delicious change from regular water. Enjoy!
Combine the below ingredients together to taste:
1-2 cinnamon sticks
1-2 apple, thinly sliced. Choose your favorite variety.
1 pitcher of water
